Ramona Lisa Wilson was 16 when she disappeared from Smithers, British Columbia, on the night of June 11, 1994. A Gitxsan Nation member and the youngest of six children, she worked as a dishwasher at Smitty’s, played outfield on a local baseball team, and had talked about becoming a psychologist. She left home about 9:45 p.m. intending to meet friends and travel toward a graduation dance in Hazelton but never arrived.

Her family reported her missing after she failed to return home, missed school and a work shift, and left belongings and wages at home. Investigators believe she was travelling or hitchhiking along Highway 16 when she vanished. On April 9, 1995, two teenagers found her remains in woods off Yelich Road near the Smithers airport. Clothing and rope or nylon ties were reported near the site; her shoes were not recovered. No official cause of death has been publicly released, but the case has been treated as a homicide.

No arrest or public charge has been announced in connection with Ramona’s death. Her family began an annual memorial walk in June 1995 to keep attention on her case and other missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. If anyone knew Ramona, saw her on the night of June 11, 1994, or has information about the area behind the airport, please come forward.
