Temistocle Temy Fernandez Casas was identified in 2024 as the man whose severed head and partial remains were found in May 2001 in a wooded area off Minerals Road in Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador. For more than two decades the victim was known as the Conception Bay John Doe or Minerals Man; forensic work dated his birth to around 1958 and placed his death in the 1990s, but the rest of his body was never recovered and the cause and circumstances of his death were not publicly disclosed.
Casas arrived in Canada from Cuba on a tourist visa in April 1992, landing in Quebec, yet police have found no records explaining when, why, or how he travelled from Quebec to Newfoundland. Genetic genealogy work beginning in 2021 produced matches that led to confirmation of Casas’s identity and to locating relatives in Cuba. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says the homicide remains an active investigation; no arrest or public charge has been announced and investigators continue to seek information, including from a woman named Joanne Bergeron who may have known Casas.
