Gary Meier, 52, was found shot to death inside his rural Lacombe County, Alberta, home on August 10, 2001. Meier was a successful auctioneer and businessman who ran Meier Auctions Ltd., a company that held significant business and property interests that later complicated estate and ownership disputes.
RCMP treated the death as a homicide and developed roughly 40 leads while examining Meier’s business and personal circle. Reporting later identified one of Meier’s trusted hired hands as the principal suspect examined by investigators; an undercover Mr. Big style operation was allegedly used in an effort to obtain incriminating evidence or a confession. Prosecutors ultimately decided the available evidence was insufficient to charge anyone, and the reported suspect died in 2014 without ever facing trial.
No arrest, prosecution, trial, or conviction followed, and the murder remains unsolved. Does anyone with knowledge of Meier Auctions, the Lacombe County area, or that time period have information that could help clarify what happened?
