Shana Lee Labatte was 30 and a mother of two when she was killed in March 2004 while living in the Kamloops area of British Columbia. She worked part-time cleaning at a hotel and was involved in the street-level sex trade while struggling with drug addiction. On the morning of March 23 she was seen downtown near Sixth Avenue and Seymour Street between about 4:00 and 5:00 a.m.; witnesses reported she entered a late-model Ford Explorer. Later that morning a couple found her body near a trail west of the pulp mill’s effluent ponds at Mission Flats. Police treated her death as a homicide and believed she may have been killed elsewhere before her body was left on Weyerhaeuser property.
Investigators released a composite sketch and sought the driver of a brown sport-utility vehicle linked to her final hours. One man later admitted spending time with Labatte that night and that he had been driving the brown SUV; he was polygraphed, cooperated, and was ultimately ruled out with no charges laid. Police examined possible connections to other violent deaths of vulnerable women in the region but no confirmed links emerged. The family has continued to seek answers and investigators have again asked the public for information.
If anyone knew Shana or saw her in downtown Kamloops that night, can you help fill in her last movements?
