Sherri Lee Hiltz, 44, was found dead the morning of April 9, 2005, in a vacant lot in the 800 block of Surrey Avenue on the North Shore of Kamloops, British Columbia. She had reportedly been seen alive the previous evening along Tranquille Road. Her identity was confirmed by fingerprint examination and investigators determined she had been the victim of foul play; later accounts described severe blunt-force trauma to the head as the cause of death.
Reports from the period describe Hiltz as a mother who was recovering from drug addiction and involved in the local sex trade, placing her among a particularly vulnerable group of women in Kamloops. Her killing occurred during a span when police were investigating several violent deaths and disappearances of women connected to street-level sex work, and comparisons were drawn with the unsolved March 2004 killing of Shana LaBatte. Several men discussed in media coverage — including Robert Balbar, Thomas Svekla, and Davey Mato Butorac — were publicly reported to have been considered or speculated about at times but later ruled out or not tied by evidence to Hiltz’s death.
Kamloops RCMP have described Hiltz’s homicide as an active, unresolved investigation, and in December 2015 renewed an appeal for public assistance.
Did anyone in the community know Sherri, her whereabouts on April 8, 2005, or have information that could help resolve this case?
