Michael Gregory Widner, 39, was found dead in March 2017 along the Pacific Marine route near Port Renfrew, British Columbia, after a hiker discovered his body. His mother, Reta Acorn, had reported him missing when he failed to make a scheduled visit; his black 2003 Volkswagen Golf was later located abandoned in William Simmons Park near Poirier Lake in Otter Point. The RCMP announced they were treating the death as a homicide and investigators believe the killing was not random, saying Widner may have arranged to meet someone at the park where his car was found.

The inquiry revealed Widner had ties to the criminal underworld. He was identified as a prospect for the Nanaimo chapter of the Hells Angels and had previously been stopped by Sooke RCMP in 2012 with cash, marijuana, a hunting knife, and multiple cellphones; his mother acknowledged his involvement in the drug trade. After his death it emerged he left no will and was supporting two families: a wife and two children in Sooke and a second marriage-like relationship in Shawnigan Lake with two more children, a fact his wife reportedly did not know until after his death.

As of late 2023 the homicide investigation remained open with no public suspects or arrests and the motive unresolved. If anyone knew Widner, his movements in March 2017, or who he might have been meeting at William Simmons Park, can you share information with investigators?
