Christene Seal was 22 and a mother of a two-year-old when she disappeared from the family mobile home near Mount Vernon, Missouri, on the morning of June 19, 1972. Her husband Linn left for work on the dairy farm around 8:00 a.m.; by 9:30 a.m. the mail carrier found the child alone and crying inside the screen door, and when Linn returned about 9:45 a.m. Christene was gone. Her purse, clothing, shoes, and car remained at the home; only a nightgown, a robe, and a light coat were reportedly missing.
Bloodhounds tracked her scent only as far as the driveway behind the family car before the trail vanished, prompting investigators to consider that she may have entered a vehicle. Investigators looked into several leads over the years, including a possible link to a home invasion and assault in a nearby town the next day and an unverified tip about a nude woman seen running from a church, but nothing produced a definitive answer. The husband later said he felt police initially assumed she left voluntarily and did not secure the scene.
Two years after she disappeared the husband filed for divorce and later remarried; seven years after the disappearance Christene was declared legally dead. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office still lists the case as open. Does anyone have memories or information about Christene, the family, or that area on June 19, 1972?
