Javon Mcginnis was 23 when he was killed in a double shooting on July 27, 2012, on the city’s east side near Olmstead and Roselle Avenues in Columbus. Police found McGinnis and another man, Albert Steele, dead after officers responded to the home at about 10:29 p.m. No immediate arrests were announced at the scene and authorities continued investigating the double homicide.
Friends and family gathered at Thornwood Commons apartments to mourn, and Javon’s father, Ernest Sowell, publicly vowed to push for answers about why his son was killed. The shooting left neighbors feeling uneasy and led some residents to stay indoors more often amid broader concerns about gun violence in the area.
