James Freeman, a 62-year-old Oakland resident, was killed on May 26, 2009. His death came during a violent year for the city, which recorded 104 homicides in 2009 and was experiencing a spike in violent crime in the late 2000s. Shootings were a leading cause of homicides during that period.
The community has repeatedly called for more resources to address unsolved cases and support grieving families.
