Marlon Mayorga, a 41-year-old social worker and community activist, was shot and killed on April 28, 2009, while walking his dog near his home in Oakland’s Dimond District at about 10:30 p.m. The attack occurred on the 3200 block of Champion Street. He worked with people struggling with substance abuse and survivors of domestic and street violence, and at the time of his death was on staff with UCSF’s Trauma Unit and supporting patients at Walden House. Born in Nicaragua in 1968, he came to the United States in the 1980s and later earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work from California State University at San Francisco. Marlon was also known as a talented salsa instructor. The community held a fundraising event with roughly 200 attendees to honor him, and Oakland Police plus Crime Stoppers offered up to a $10,000 reward; no arrests have been made and police had not determined a clear motive, though robbery was considered possible.

Did anyone in the Dimond District or who knew Marlon see or hear anything that night or have information that could help the investigation?
