Janice Laneau Wright was 34 when she disappeared from Suffolk, Virginia, sometime between early November and Thanksgiving 1993. The last confirmed sighting placed her in the 2100 block of Kentucky Avenue; her four-year-old son remembers being told to go inside and change clothes at a barbecue, and when he returned she was gone. She had been laid off that day from a Big Lots on North Main Street and was embroiled in a bitter custody dispute with her longtime boyfriend over their youngest child, a hearing she was expected to attend on December 13 that she never did.
No one in the family had seen or heard from her through November, and her sister reported her missing to the Suffolk Police Department on December 21, 1993. The boyfriend denied involvement but declined a polygraph. Detectives interviewed associates and followed leads over the years; a tip in January 2019 prompted an extensive search of a central Virginia park for remains, but nothing was found. Her family held a memorial in September 2022 at the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
Her disappearance remains unsolved; anyone who knew Janice, her routines, or was in the 2100 block of Kentucky Avenue that autumn is asked to share what they remember.
