Gregory L. Griffin, a 47-year-old Black man from Youngstown, Ohio, was identified in February 2017 as the person whose skeletal remains were found on July 23, 2006, in a swampy area near Mosquito Lake State Park in Cortland. The remains were unclothed and largely stripped of skin, with only some small bones intact; a single gold earring was recovered near the left side of the skull and no other personal effects were found. A facial reconstruction made by the FBI in 2010 did not generate leads, and DNA submitted after a 2017 tip produced the confirmed identification about two weeks later.

The Trumbull County Coroner, Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk, ruled the death a homicide, but the exact cause of death could not be determined from the condition of the remains. The case remains open and unsolved.

If anyone knew Gregory Griffin or has information about his last movements or how he may have come to be at Mosquito Lake State Park, please come forward.
