Jaquilla Evonne Scales was 4 years old when she disappeared from her Wichita, Kansas, home on the night of September 5, 2001. She was last seen asleep in her bed at about 12:30 a.m.; by 3:00 a.m. she was discovered missing and extensive searches turned up no trace. There were no signs of forced entry or an apparent struggle, and the family’s dog did not bark. The back door was broken and could not be locked, a detail investigators noted as potentially relevant.
Jaquilla had been living with her great-grandmother, her younger brother and two uncles; her mother, Eureka Scales, was staying at a friend’s house that night. Social workers later removed the younger brother over concerns about the home’s condition, though he was returned to his mother three years after the disappearance. Jaquilla had just started preschool the day before, was described as talkative, and was known for colorful barrettes and a doll that could turn over by itself. Authorities remain unsure whether she was abducted or what else may have occurred.
If anyone saw Jaquilla or was in the North Volutsia Street neighborhood that night, please share what was observed.
