On October 30, 1987, Melinda Newcomb, age 24, was one of three people shot to death at an isolated 19th-century cabin on Consolidated Road in Eaton, Ohio. Melinda, David Smelser and Donnie Marker were each shot in the head; their bodies were found three days later on November 2.
Melinda worked at a group home for mentally challenged adults and had plans to study at Sinclair Community College. She had been at The Stable, a local bar in Eaton, and reportedly offered to give Marker, who had been drinking, a ride home. Smelser, who lived in the cabin, appeared to be the apparent target, while Melinda and Marker may have arrived unexpectedly. Reports say there were no signs of struggle and that Melinda was shot twice in the head; investigators have described a good person of interest but say there is not enough evidence to charge anyone.
No arrests have been made and the case remains unsolved in Preble County. If anyone has information that could help bring justice for Melinda and the other victims, please contact law enforcement.
