Emily Michelle Sawyer was four years old when she vanished from Toledo, Ohio, in the spring of 1988. She was last seen after spending Easter with her mother, Carol Melinda Sinkey Sawyer, and disappeared the day before a court was expected to award custody to her father, Daniel Sawyer. When Daniel arrived at Carol’s home on East University Street to pick up Emily, both mother and child were gone.
Authorities treated the case as a likely family abduction. Carol had previously accused Daniel of abuse, but a seven-month investigation found no evidence to support those allegations. Investigators believed Emily was with her noncustodial mother, and the case became linked to an organization called Children of the Underground; the group’s alleged leader, Faye Yager, reportedly admitted to helping Carol and Emily after they first disappeared. Custody was later awarded to Daniel in their absence, and a minor warrant for Emily’s return was issued in Lucas County; no warrants were filed for Carol. Age-progressed images of Emily have been circulated, and her paternal grandparents continue to hope she will be found.
Did anyone in the Toledo area or beyond ever encounter a woman and child using the names Sinkey, Cergoli, or Cerogol in the late 1980s or afterwards?
