Michelle Mercuri was 27 when she was found dead on December 10, 2016, in the South Side Slopes neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Police discovered her lying in the street near her home on Eccles Street with a gunshot wound to the head; paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene and the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

The incident was first reported as a possible robbery, and later accounts mentioned a potential hostage situation that prompted a SWAT response, though no hostage situation was confirmed. Neighbors told investigators they heard what sounded like domestic violence and a muffled gunshot. Riley Casaldi reported hearing arguing and a woman being assaulted before the gunshot; longtime neighbor John Levandoski described Mercuri’s death as the loss of an innocent life.

No suspects have been identified and the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.
