Eric Mandeville was 20 when he was shot and killed in Long Beach on April 22, 2007. Described as clean-cut and well-liked, he had spent part of his youth in foster care and was working at a McDonald’s at the time of his death. The shooting happened while he was walking outside; investigators believe he was likely targeted because of his age, race and a perceived association with a rival gang.
Mandeville’s death came amid a violent stretch in Long Beach: another man, Alfred Henderson, 47, was killed hours later nearby, and an 18-year-old, Kenneth Frison, died of gunshot injuries the next day. Those clustered incidents reflect intense gang tensions in the area and the risks faced by young men in those neighborhoods.
