Was someone stalking her? Was this a crime of opportunity? She was probably a victim of assault and then homicide. There is a lot of land up there to hide a body in. How agonizing for her family to deal with even after all these years.
Julie Weflen, 28, vanished while on the job at a remote Bonneville Power Administration substation northwest of Spokane on a September afternoon in 1987. She signed into the Spring Hill Substation near Four Mound and Coulee Hite roads at about 2:30 p.m. on September 16 and is believed to have finished work roughly an hour later. Her work truck was found with the driver’s-side door and back hatch open; her hard hat, toolbox, water bottle and sunglasses were scattered nearby and her purse remained in the vehicle.
Scene details indicated a violent struggle: investigators noted drag marks in the gravel and fresh tire tracks that did not match Weflen’s truck. An extensive search produced no trace of her, and authorities quickly came to believe she had been overpowered and abducted. Her husband Mike Weflen was ruled out as a suspect and took part in the searches. The case is officially considered a presumed homicide; no arrests have been made and her body has never been recovered. Investigators looked at possible links to other disappearances in the Spokane–Coeur d’Alene area but found no concrete connections.
Does anyone who worked in that part of the power system in 1987 or who remembers activity near Four Mound and Coulee Hite roads have information that could be useful?
