Jillian Dee Cutshall, 9, vanished from Norfolk, Nebraska, on the morning of August 13, 1987. She was staying with her father for the summer and was walking four blocks from his apartment to her babysitter’s home when she failed to arrive. The babysitter assumed Jillian had stayed home; the family realized she was missing later that day when her stepmother came to pick her up.

An extensive search began that day. Three months later Jillian’s clothing and shoes were recovered in a wildlife refuge about ten miles from her home. Those items offered clues but no definitive answers about what happened to her. In 1991 David Phelps, who had lived in the same apartment building as Jillian’s father, was convicted of abducting her and received a life sentence. Jillian’s remains have never been found and she was declared legally dead; the case remains open.
