Steven Pearsall was 35 when he vanished from Lewiston, Idaho, on the night of September 14, 1982. Employed as a janitor at the Lewiston Civic Theater and a former U.S. Air Force corporal, he told a friend he was going to the theater to do laundry and practice his clarinet; the instrument was later found at the theater, though he was not known to leave it unattended. His car stayed at a friend’s house and an uncashed paycheck remained in his apartment.
Pearsall disappeared the same night as 21-year-old Kristina Nelson and her 18-year-old stepsister Jacqueline Brandy Miller, who would have walked past the theater on their way to a grocery store. Nelson had previously worked at the theater, and Pearsall had taken over her job. Nearly two years later Nelson and Miller’s remains were found in a canyon in Kendrick, Idaho, and their deaths were ruled homicides. Investigators have long suspected a connection and believe Pearsall may have been killed after witnessing what happened to the two women.
Authorities have named a person of interest who was active at the theater and present that night; he has been interviewed but not publicly identified and denies involvement. No arrests have been announced and the case remains unsolved. Did anyone in Lewiston know Pearsall’s routines or see him near the theater that night?
