Melanie Colon was 22 and a young mother when she was last seen in Philadelphia on the evening of May 8, 2012, getting into a car with a 41-year-old acquaintance, Reynaldo Torres. Her body was found on May 12 behind an apartment building in the Juniata Park section; an autopsy determined she died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Torres was reported missing after that night; his car turned up abandoned in Feltonville with no sign of him. More than a year later, investigators searching a ravine in North Philadelphia recovered a jawbone that was identified as Torres, but no one has been charged in Melanie’s murder. Authorities have said they believe the man tied to a separate murder investigated in connection with a Philadelphia Police Department scandal was linked to both Colon’s and Torres’s deaths. A detective, Ronald Dove, was later convicted on conspiracy and hindering apprehension charges in the other case but was not charged in Melanie’s killing.
No arrest has been announced in Melanie Colon’s homicide. If anyone knew Melanie, Reynaldo Torres, or saw them in North Philadelphia or Juniata Park in May 2012, please share what might help move this case forward.
