Rodney Derwin Matthews, a 37-year-old Black man from Birmingham, was shot to death in early December 2010 and found alone in the driver’s seat of a green Honda Civic in the 1900 block of 31st Avenue North in North Birmingham. Reports place the discovery on December 10 while his obituary lists his date of death as December 9, 2010, suggesting the shooting occurred late and authorities worked backward to confirm the time of death. Investigators believed the person who fired the fatal shot was likely sitting in the passenger seat, a detail that suggests Matthews may have been with someone he knew or at least had allowed into the car with him when the violence occurred.
Matthews’s obituary records that he was a member of South Park Seventh Day Adventist Church and lists survivors including daughter Taja Renee Shabazz, son Rodney Corion Myrick, and mother Eva J. Richmond, among a large extended family.
If anyone knew Matthews, his movements that night, or saw the green Honda Civic in that area, please share what is known.
