Ronald Greene, 49, died on a roadside in Louisiana in the late hours of a May evening in 2019 after a traffic stop turned violent. The first account given to his family said he died in a car crash following a high-speed chase, but that explanation began to unravel when an emergency room doctor questioned how Greene’s extensively bruised and battered body matched the minor vehicle damage.

Body camera and audio later showed troopers swarming Greene’s car after the chase ended. He pleaded for mercy and said he was scared while his hands were visible. Officers repeatedly used a stun gun on him, punched him, put him in a chokehold, shackled his ankles and dragged him face down. He was left prone for more than nine minutes, a position noted by use-of-force experts as potentially restricting breathing. One trooper, Chris Hollingsworth, was recorded saying he beat Greene “the ever-living f--- out of him.”

An initial coroner’s report ruled accidental cardiac arrest, but a reexamined autopsy ordered by the FBI found injuries inconsistent with a crash and the medical examiner later ruled the death a homicide. In December 2022 five officers were indicted on state charges; the investigation and prosecutions have been slow and contested. Did anyone in the Monroe area see or hear anything the night Greene was stopped that could help explain what happened?
