Doris Fay Lentz was 31 when she was last seen on the evening of April 23, 1996. She left her Arlington County, Virginia home saying she was going to pick up her young daughter from her estranged husband’s residence in Fort Washington, Maryland. The daughter was actually out of state that day.
Several days later Doris’s dark teal 1994 Toyota Celica was found abandoned in a Washington, D.C. apartment-complex parking lot in a high-crime area. The car was splattered with blood; her keys, money, credit cards, and purse were left inside. Doris worked as a receptionist for a former United States senator and was amid a contentious divorce from Jay E. Lentz, a former naval intelligence officer, against whom she had previously filed police reports for abuse and harassment.
Investigators suspected foul play. Jay Lentz later moved with the couple’s daughter to Indiana; in May 2001 he was arrested and charged in connection with Doris’s disappearance and death. He was convicted in June 2003, that verdict was overturned, and an appeals court ordered a new trial that resulted in another conviction in March 2006. Doris’s body has never been found and there was no confession, murder weapon, or eyewitness. Does anyone who knew Doris or saw her car in D.C. in late April 1996 have information that could help fill in the gaps?
