On May 16, 2003, a robbery at Blue Ridge Savings Bank in Greer, South Carolina, ended in a triple homicide that included Dr. James Elbert Eb Barnes, a 60-year-old white male, and his wife Margaret Maggie Barnes. A lone gunman armed with a .40 caliber Glock confronted head teller Sylvia Holtzclaw and the Barneses, herding all three into a back utility room after a silent alarm sounded about 1:28 p.m. All three were found shot dead when officers arrived at 1:41 p.m.
The robber stole a large amount of cash and the bank’s security footage. Investigators recovered only limited leads, including grainy gas-station footage of a red coupe speeding away. Numerous tips and several persons of interest were later checked—one had an alibi, and others under investigation for a similar crime in another state were incarcerated at the time—but no suspects have been officially named or charged.
What did anyone who lived or worked near the bank on May 16, 2003, see that day that might help finally identify the shooter?
