Ronnie Bates, 28, was reported missing on January 17, 1997, after leaving his residence and was not seen alive again. Human remains found at Bowen Ranch in Apple Valley, California, on May 21, 1998, were later identified as Bates, and the death has been classified as a homicide.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has kept the case open as a cold case and has made public appeals for tips, saying no suspects have been identified. Investigators describe the case as challenging because of limited initial evidence and no known eyewitnesses to the killing.
