Teresa Mendez was 20 and from El Monte, California, when she was shot and killed on October 8, 1995. Her body was found along a roadway in Oak Hills after officers initially responded to reports of a possible fatal accident near Interstate 15 on Caliente Road. Investigators determined she had been shot and was one of two victims that day; the other, Valerie Ortiz, also 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mendez was taken by ambulance to a Palm Desert hospital but died before detectives could interview her. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has kept the case open and is asking for information that might help identify who shot the two young women.

If anyone has information about Teresa’s movements that day or about the shooting near Caliente Road, please share what you know.
