Victor Michael Harris III was 19 when he was shot and killed one November afternoon in 2011 at the Arbor Place apartment complex on South Hall of Fame Drive in Knoxville, Tennessee. His mother, Devona Wilder, heard him screaming for her, found him bleeding on the pavement, and he died during surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

The Knoxville Police Department treated the killing as gang-related. Although numerous bystanders were present, the investigation stalled because witnesses were unwilling to cooperate, and no suspects have ever been publicly named or arrested. Wilder has said many in the community knew who was responsible but feared coming forward; the family’s appeals for justice continue.
