On the night of June 30, 1997, James Douglas MacArthur Coclough, 55, and his wife Ruby were watching television in their Knoxville home when two unidentified men broke in at about 11:10 p.m. The intruders forced Coclough to the floor and shot him multiple times; his wife was also assaulted before the men fled. Coclough, a retired U.S. Air Force sergeant and Vietnam veteran and father of five, was taken to a local hospital and died of his injuries on July 6, 1997 after a week-long struggle.
Authorities treated the episode as a presumed robbery, though it has not been confirmed whether anything was taken. More than two decades later the two attackers remain unidentified and no arrests have been announced. The Knoxville Police Department is offering a reward for information leading to arrest and conviction.
Does anyone have information about that June 30, 1997 home invasion or remember details that could help investigators?
