Brandon Tre’Nelle Washington, 20, was killed in Houston on April 25, 2008, after a convenience-store employee suspected him of shoplifting a candy bar. Officer Martin Rivera responded and fired four shots, striking Washington in the head and leg; Washington was pronounced dead at the scene. A grand jury declined to indict Rivera a few months after the shooting, and no criminal charges were filed.
The killing touched off local anger and sustained advocacy. Brandon’s mother, Antoinette Washington, spoke publicly about her frustration and the emotional toll of what she described as a lack of accountability. Mothers Against Police Brutality and other groups cited the case while calling for reforms and greater scrutiny of law enforcement, noting Rivera’s continued career in policing as emblematic of broader oversight problems.
The death began with an allegation of a minor theft and has been remembered as an example of a disproportionate response by police; the family and community groups have urged continued attention to accountability. Did anyone in the area around Lake June Road in April 2008 see or hear anything that could shed light on that night?
