Cornisha McCowan was 13 when she was killed in a drive-by shooting in Houston on April 14, 2007. The shooting happened around 12:35 a.m. after she had been picked up from the Butler Skating Rink in southwest Houston. Cornisha was a passenger in a gold Ford Taurus driven by her niece’s stepfather, Sam Monroe, when another vehicle pulled up and opened fire. She was hit multiple times, taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators treated Cornisha’s death as a likely case of mistaken identity. Earlier that evening two large, gang-related fights had broken out at the skating rink, and police believe the shooters may have targeted Monroe’s car because of its tinted windows and fancy rims, not because of anyone inside. Police and Crime Stoppers appealed for help, but after several weeks the initial leads had not identified suspects.

If anyone knew who was involved in the fights at the rink that night or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
