On May 15, 1988 a fisherman near the Averill–Canaan town line in Vermont, about a mile south of the Canadian border, found human remains of a white female estimated to be 16 to 22 years old. Investigators determined she had been dead three to five years and ruled the case a homicide due to repeated blows to the head with a blunt object.
The Jane Doe remained unidentified until 1997, when she was matched to Chantel Saurial, a 16-year-old reported missing from Montreal in May 1987. At the time she disappeared she was homeless, staying at a youth detention center, and slipped away during a group outing. Reports say she had been involved in drugs and prostitution and may have worked as a drug courier for a local motorcycle gang; a friend recalled she was often scared while living on the streets.
No suspects have been publicly named and no arrests are reported. Does anyone have information about Chantel’s last movements in Montreal or about contacts she may have had across the border?
