On the evening of May 9, 2003, Andre Heckstall, a 40-year-old African American man, was standing in front of a Dollar Tree in the 600 block of Newtown Road in Virginia Beach around 5:30 p.m. He was talking with another Black man when a gunshot rang out. Heckstall was found bleeding and unconscious, taken to a hospital, and died shortly afterward; the Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death a homicide from a gunshot wound.
Police investigated at the scene but never identified or arrested a suspect. The man Heckstall was speaking to at the time remains unknown and is considered a suspect; the case later became cold but is still listed with the Virginia Beach Police Department Cold Case Homicide Unit.
Did anyone in the area that evening recognize the man Heckstall was speaking with or recall seeing anything suspicious near the Dollar Tree?
