In the early morning hours of Sunday, July 12, 1992, 15-year-old Reginald Basnight Jr was standing in the 1200 block of Glyndon Drive in Virginia Beach when a dispute with someone in a small white car over a girl turned deadly. Witnesses said the argument escalated and a shot was fired; Reggie, described as a light-skinned Black male with green eyes and black hair, was struck in the chest and collapsed in the doorway of a home around 12:30 a.m. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

He was a student at Salem High School at the time. The death was ruled a homicide and remains an active cold case with the Virginia Beach Police Department; witnesses had described the car but no arrests have ever been made.
