On the afternoon of November 2, 1988, gunfire at the intersection of Cleveland Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Virginia Beach ended the life of 50-year-old Autry Church. Police found Church inside his black Pontiac Fiero at about 5:15 p.m.; he was pronounced dead after rescue personnel tried to save him. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide. Church, a white male who worked in retail sales, was listed as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 175 pounds, with blue eyes and collar-length black hair.
Witnesses reported seeing a person of interest near Church’s car around the time shots were heard: described as a white male about 5 feet 9 inches tall with a medium build and dark hair, wearing white pants. No arrests have been announced, and the Virginia Beach Police Department continues to treat the case as an active cold-case homicide. If anyone remembers seeing that person near Cleveland Street and Pennsylvania Avenue on November 2, 1988, please share what is known.
