Laurie Ann Powell was 18 when she was last seen around midnight on March 9, 1988, in Gloucester County, Virginia. After an argument with her boyfriend she got out of his vehicle and began walking along Route 614 toward Route 17; that was the last confirmed sighting of her alive.

Her body was found on April 2, 1988, in the Elizabeth River near Craney Island. An autopsy showed she had been stabbed multiple times, the fatal wound a stab to the back of her neck. The boyfriend was investigated early on but was never charged and died in 2016. The case subsequently went cold and remained an unsolved homicide.
