Velma Jane Peregory, 57, was found dead inside her locked apartment in the 3500 block of Francis Land Court in Virginia Beach on the morning of February 26, 1987. She had been last seen the day before, February 25, near her home in the Rose Hall Apartment complex. An autopsy determined she died from a gunshot wound and her death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators searched Peregory’s apartment and found no signs of a struggle and no evidence of robbery; valuables were left behind. Despite repeated reviews of the evidence over the years, the case remained unsolved and no arrests or publicly identified suspects have been announced. The investigation was described as an active cold case with the Virginia Beach Police Department.
