Cynthia Rearden, 31, was last seen the evening of June 20, 1999, leaving the Hayloft Saloon in downtown Monroe, less than a mile from her home. She was a single mother to an 8-year-old son and had been planning to marry that summer. Her car was broken down that night, and witness accounts conflict on whether she left alone or with others. Family raised the alarm the next day when she failed to pick up her son.
Skeletal remains found in a marshy area off Woods Lake Road on February 10, 2000, were later identified by dental records as Cynthia’s. Investigators determined she had been killed elsewhere and her body moved to the marsh. Clothing fragments near the remains matched what she had been wearing that night, and a multi-colored sweater sleeve with a blue cuff found nearby—described publicly in 2009—did not belong to her. A man arrested in an unrelated murder was investigated, but no arrests have been announced in Cynthia’s case. Her family continues to seek answers.
If anyone knew Cynthia, saw her that night, or recognizes the sweater sleeve, please come forward with information.
