Steven Craig Mayo, a 45-year-old Fort Lupton business owner, was found shot to death inside his home on Weld County Road 18; neighbors discovered the scene on the morning of December 19, 2000, after noticing a broken screen door and a front door left slightly ajar. The single gunshot wound was ruled a homicide, and the Weld County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation.

Mayo owned and operated the Metro Grease Company and was known in the community; the killing shocked friends and neighbors. Investigators followed multiple leads and examined several people of interest but were never able to develop a solid suspect or establish a definitive motive. The case eventually went cold and remains unsolved with no arrests announced.

Anyone with memories of Mayo, knowledge of his business or contacts in Fort Lupton around December 2000, or any information about this shooting is asked to come forward.
