On a Sunday morning in late April 1986 hikers in Jefferson County, Colorado found the body of 29-year-old Dellmer Betts in a drainage ditch along Highway 6, roughly four and a half miles west of Highway 58. He was a white man dressed in blue jeans, a blue T-shirt, and bright orange socks. Investigators classified his death as a homicide.
Betts had been last seen two days earlier, on Friday, April 25, 1986, at a home near 34th and Lawrence in Denver where he was staying temporarily. He had recently been released from prison following a narcotics violation and was known to use and sell drugs. A brown briefcase belonging to him was missing when his body was found; that item has never been recovered.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office lists the case as open and unsolved, with no public arrests or named suspects. If anyone knew Betts, his movements in late April 1986, or has information about the missing briefcase, please come forward.
