On the morning of April 7, 1984, the body of 29-year-old concrete cutter Mark Groezinger was found in the front seat of a blue and white 1973 Buick parked near the Mother Cabrini Shrine outside Golden, Colorado. Deputies reported the driver’s side window shattered and numerous shell casings inside and outside the car; investigators described the scene as a crime of passion and rage. Robbery was ruled out because Mark’s wallet and money remained, though his keys and some jewelry were missing and a paper bag of .38 caliber bullets was on the floorboard.
Investigators focused on Mark’s wife, Judy Groezinger, after learning she had bought a .38 caliber handgun from a pawn shop three days before the killing and initially did not disclose the purchase. Her timeline placed Mark dropping her off about 8:30 p.m. before he went to play pool, but witnesses placed Judy with an unidentified man at the pawnshop and a liquor store. Judy was never charged and reportedly passed a lie detector test; the couple’s substantial life insurance policy was noted by investigators. The case went cold with no arrest and several unanswered questions.
Did anyone in the Golden area recognize the man seen with Judy at the pawnshop and liquor store, or have information about Mark’s missing keys and jewelry?
