Cadarius Munford, 27, was shot and killed on December 20, 2019, after a dispute between two men in Brighton, Alabama, culminating in a deadly encounter in nearby Bessemer. Munford was Black.

A suspect was arrested quickly: 33-year-old Vijay Ramure Lipscomb was taken into custody and charged with murder, held without bond beginning December 21, 2019. In February 2020 the case against Lipscomb was bound over to a grand jury for possible indictment.

While awaiting trial in April 2020, Lipscomb was found unresponsive in his jail cell after being seen on camera inhaling an unknown substance; he was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. Authorities said foul play was not suspected and an autopsy was ordered, which ended the prosecution against him in Munford’s killing.
