Zakia Denise Bibbs was 25 when she was shot and killed on Interstate 20/59 in Tuscaloosa County on July 5, 2019. She was riding in a Ford Fusion with friends, heading north to Atlanta for a birthday weekend, when an SUV, possibly a Nissan Pathfinder, approached from behind with its high beams on. Investigators say the two vehicles repeatedly passed each other, and that the SUV pulled alongside the Fusion and an occupant opened fire. Several people in the Fusion were struck; Zakia was fatally wounded and was discovered after the driver exited at Exit 97 near Lake View.

Authorities suspect the shooting arose from a road rage incident. The case has been hampered by a lack of witnesses and physical evidence from two moving vehicles on a holiday weekend. The governor announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, but no arrests or public suspect identifications have been announced. Zakia, a Holt High School graduate who hoped to become a cosmetologist, left behind a young son.
