A shooting in Bessemer, Alabama left Jeremy Melvin Simpson, a 40-year-old Black man, dead after he was found inside a vehicle on a Sunday. Police responding to the scene also discovered a second person who had been shot and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The area was secured as a crime scene while detectives worked to reconstruct what happened; motive was not immediately clear.
In the days after the killing, investigators identified Cornelius Toney as a suspect and charged him with one count of murder in Simpson’s death and one count of attempted murder for the injured second victim. Any witnesses or anyone with information about the shooting are urged to come forward.
