On Valentine’s Day 2020, 41-year-old Shemethia Tynise Coteat Stanton was shot four times from behind in the parking lot of The Park at Wellington and Wakefield apartment complex in Hoover, Alabama. The attack happened shortly before 7 p.m. as she was taking items from the backseat of her car; she was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:05 p.m. Her 17-year-old daughter heard the gunshots, then tires speeding away, and found her mother unresponsive after going outside to check.

Family remembered Shemethia as a loving, God-fearing mother of four and the business operations manager at an Old Navy. Investigators believe she was specifically targeted and may have been ambushed while returning home. The Hoover Police Department has identified a suspect but says more evidence is needed to secure an arrest. No arrests have been announced and Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. The family later discovered Shemethia’s wedding ring, held as evidence, had been sold at a county auction after being deemed unclaimed property.

If anyone knew Shemethia or saw anything in the area that evening, please share what you know with Hoover Police or Crime Stoppers.
