Dominic Coleman, 20, a Black man from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was shot and killed outside the Winston Mart convenience store on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard late on April 26, 2020. Police described an altercation that spilled into the store parking lot involving multiple people and vehicles, with shots fired and several vehicles struck. Detectives said the violence centered on a single shooter who opened fire on two people; Coleman was hit and pronounced dead at the scene. The other intended target was reported not to have been struck and returned fire, and the alleged shooter was wounded once and taken for nonlife-threatening medical treatment. By the next day authorities announced an arrest: 18-year-old Nathaniel Patton was booked on murder and attempted murder charges and reported bond totaling $210,000. The shooting drew attention because it occurred at the same convenience store where another fatal shooting had taken place days earlier, though officials said the cases were not related. Questions remained about what sparked the exchange and the identity of the second person in the crossfire.
