Leonna Monae Tucker, 21, was found dead in her apartment at The Grand at Rum Creek on Highway 69 South in Tuscaloosa on Sunday, July 19, 2020. Officers responding to a report of a shooting discovered she had suffered a single gunshot wound.

Investigators quickly focused on her 23-year-old ex-boyfriend, Eric Markett Hayward. The relationship had recently ended and witnesses said Hayward had been depressed and increasingly stalking Tucker; one witness reported Hayward saying that if he could not have her no one could. Surveillance footage from the evening of Saturday, July 18 shows Hayward arriving at the complex, waiting for Tucker, who arrived shortly before 7:00 p.m., and Hayward leaving about thirteen minutes later. Tucker’s body was discovered the next afternoon by a friend looking for Hayward.

Hayward was located and arrested in Ridgeland, Mississippi on July 20 and transported back to Alabama. He was charged with murder and booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail with bond set at $150,000.
