On May 31, 2021, Roger Dale Keller, 71, was shot and killed in the front yard of a home on Chilton County Road 954 in Jemison, Alabama after an officer-involved exchange of gunfire. Police were dispatched about 11:30 a.m. following reports that a man with a gun was threatening to shoot two people. Witnesses said gunfire had already started before officers arrived. According to the Jemison police chief as reported locally, an officer arriving on scene saw Keller holding a gun; Keller fired at the officer, who returned fire and struck Keller.

The officer was not injured. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency State Bureau of Investigation took over the inquiry and was to forward findings to the Chilton County District Attorney’s Office. An obituary later listed Keller as of Calera and gave funeral and burial details; no arrest of another suspect is described in the coverage.
