Alverner Blanks was 76 when he was fatally injured after a neighborhood argument in Bessemer, Alabama, in September 2021. The dispute with his neighbor, Monyuett Hinson, reportedly became violent when Hinson struck Blanks with a space heater, rendering him unconscious. A neighbor found him and he was taken to a local hospital.

Blanks spent about two weeks receiving hospital care, then was moved to an assisted-living facility, where he died on September 24, 2021. Hinson was initially arrested on an attempted murder charge and released on bond; after Blanks died she was arrested again on a capital murder charge.
