A late-afternoon dispute between two acquaintances in Bessemer, Alabama, ended in mutual gunfire on November 28, 2021, leaving both men dead. One victim was 60-year-old Willie Albert Wells; the other was 62-year-old Emmit King, a former Olympic relay team member and celebrated track star. The argument reportedly began outside a house and escalated until both men drew handguns and shot at one another. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds.

King was taken to a nearby hospital but later died of his injuries. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified both men. Authorities confirmed the men knew each other, but the specific reason for the dispute that led to the shootout has not been made public.

Did anyone in Bessemer witness that confrontation or know what sparked the argument?
